Horses survive by instinct in the herd and have a social order not dissimilar to how we do in society. They have an acute awareness of dynamics in the herd and each horse has their own personality and interacts accordingly. They too are flight and fight animals and share uncanny similarities in their emotional brain to humans. Like us they rely on each other for survival. Horses dont care for materialism or big egos and will often “ react or take advantage” of humans who display aggressive or overly-passive tendencies but will happily interact with someone who is well grounded, serene, authentic, and has qualities of someone who is not afraid to be a leader with clarity, consistency, compassion and fairness...In fact this is an example of a true leader of the herd!Hence, equine assisted learning is a clever feedback mechanism where the interaction with the horse can show up our own “ herd dynamics” that may be playing out in our emotions, and behaviours and interactions. We are not born with competent socialisation skills and many of us are never been taught or shown by example how to navigate and participate in relationships whether intimate or work or family. Horses really show their master skills at teaching us balance between being assertive yet being respectful and maintaining personal and social integrity.
